A Closer Look: Front Range Jersey Dairy

Dan Duhalde, his wife, Patty, and daughter, Nicole, tried something new in 2013 by moving their operation from California to Windsor, Colo. The family milks 125 cows, offers farm tours with a viewing area in the milking parlor and operates a petting zoo.


The year Dan’s grandfather, Louis, started a dairy in El Monte, Calif.

“My dad worked with his father, and then I worked the dairy with my father. In 2013, my dad decided to sell the operation. I wanted to dairy on my own, so DFA and the Registered Jersey Association helped me find a place in Colorado. We moved a few Jerseys from California and bought the rest in Kansas and Colorado.” 


The number of cows out of the family’s 125-cow herd that originated from Nicole’s 4-H breeding project.

“Nicole is a natural around cows. She knows how to handle them and take care of them. She’s not afraid to work with the large animals.”


The number of generations the family has been dairying. 

“Nicole is the fourth-generation farmer and has different challenges in front of her. We’re not a big dairy, so we’re going to work to make the small scale successful. We have all registered Jerseys so we are looking to make the genetics more valuable.”


The lowest temperature the Duhaldes experienced their first winter in Colorado.

“This was our first winter out of California. I saw on my phone one night that the temperature reached 18 degrees below zero. I have been amazed at how resilient the cows are. I didn’t see a drop in their milk production, and it seems like they love it here. The calves are doing well, too.“
